Radcliffe Road/Cyril Road crossing improvements to start

Works are now underway to widen and upgrade a crossing on Radcliffe Road, West Bridgford, with new technology.

The improvements, which will be delivered by Via East Midlands and funded through Nottingham City Council’s Transforming Cities Fund allocation, began on Monday 2 November.

As part of the works, the existing toucan crossing at the junction of Radcliffe Road and Cyril Road will be widened to provide extra space for pedestrians, cyclists and other wheeled users, bringing the crossing up to a modern standard.

New pedestrian detection technology will also be installed, meaning that crossing times will adapt to the speed of those crossing.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead for journeys along Radcliffe Road as temporary two-way traffic lights will be in place between 9:30am and 3:30pm. A temporary diversion will be in place for pedestrians.

The works will be done in two phases, with the first due to finish on 4 December to reduce the impact on local traffic over Christmas. Teams will then be back on site from 4 January 2027.

Councillor Bert Bingham, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “These crossing improvements for pedestrians and cyclists form part of a wider scheme which also includes the recently opened Waterside Bridge over the River Trent, improvements to riverside paths and a creation of a new connecting pathway to Holme Road.

“These works are a great example of partnership working across organisations to deliver real improvements for residents.

“This upgraded crossing will give pedestrians and cyclists more space to cross and the introduction of new pedestrian detection technology will mean that crossing users can be reassured they will have plenty of time to cross.

“The technology detects when users are still on the crossing and times the lights to stay on red until the pedestrian or cyclist is safely across.

“We know that news of this temporary traffic management will have an impact on local motorists however this is necessary to ensure the safety of our staff working on site.

“The temporary traffic lights will be in place during off peak hours to reduce disruption to motorists in the morning and evening rush hour and these works will take a break over the festive season and resume in January.”
