Discovering Notts' rebellious past

With the Easter holidays well underway, Rebel Rangers is an interactive trail designed for families with children aged 5–14, to explore some of the region’s most iconic days out, heritage sites and green spaces while uncovering fascinating stories from the past.

The trail is a partnership between Newark and Sherwood District Council, Bassetlaw District Council, Bolsover District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council with the aim of encouraging people to visit local attractions which helps support the local economy.

Each participating site is linked to a different ‘rebel’ from history, bringing their stories to life in a fun and interactive way. From legendary outlaws to daring revolutionaries, families will discover how these rebels shaped the region’s heritage while completing exciting challenges.

This year’s trail includes some incredible destinations:

  • Rufford Abbey Country Park

  • Thoresby Park

  • Bolsover Castle

  • Hardwick Hall

  • Creswell Crags and Welbeck Estate

  • Clumber Park.

Families who complete all six challenges will be entered into a prize draw to win a £1,000 Center Parcs gift card, alongside a range of exciting runner‑up prizes.

Councillor James Walker-Gurley, Nottinghamshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Asset Management said this was great example of working in partnership to provide families across the region with an engaging and educational activity during the holiday period. He said:

“Robin Hood is of course the world-famous legend which helped put Nottinghamshire well and truly on the map, but this campaign will highlight some of the less well-known, but equally as fascinating, rebels from our history.”

“We’re delighted to be involved as this trail uncovers historical wonders and gives our residents and families the chance to visit some of the amazing sites our county has to offer.”

The challenge runs from Friday 13 February to Sunday 19 April 2026.  To register and find out more visit www.rebelrangers.com
