County prepares to celebrate sixth Nottinghamshire Day
Residents and visitors are being encouraged to celebrate Nottinghamshire Day on Tuesday (25 August) by exploring everything our wonderful county has to offer.
The annual summer special, now in its sixth year, is an opportunity to showcase the county’s rich heritage, beautiful landscapes, thriving communities, businesses, arts and culture, sport and attractions.
Nottinghamshire County Council Leader, Councillor Mick Barton, alongside Chairman, Councillor Christopher Adegoke, will raise the distinctive green, red, and white Robin Hood flag in the grounds of County Hall as part of the celebrations.
Cllr Barton said: “Nottinghamshire is a fantastic place to live, work and visit, and Nottinghamshire Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everything that makes our county so special.
“From historic attractions, villages and landmarks to our theatres, sporting venues, independent businesses, restaurants and beautiful countryside, there really is something for everyone.
“I’d encourage residents to use the day as an opportunity to discover somewhere new – perhaps somewhere right on your doorstep that you’ve never visited before.
“Whether you’re watching football or cricket, enjoying a concert or show, exploring our heritage or simply enjoying a meal at a local restaurant, I hope everyone will get involved and make the most of Nottinghamshire Day.
“It’s also an important opportunity to support our local businesses. I’d encourage everyone to shop locally, share your favourite Nottinghamshire businesses on social media and help showcase the fantastic people who make our county such a great place to live and visit.”
Cllr Adegoke said he is ‘honoured and proud’ to be involved in this year’s celebrations.
He said: “Nottinghamshire has many fantastic places and people who we rightly showcase, and I am truly honoured and proud to be leading the celebrations for what should be a fantastic day once again.
“We should be proud of our heritage, communities and people and Nottinghamshire Day is another milestone in our county’s rich history.”
Nottinghamshire sporting stars have also revealed why they love Robin Hood County so much.
Nottingham Forest’s home-grown midfield star Ryan Yates said: “The reason why I love Nottinghamshire so much is because, firstly, Nottingham Forest is such a family club.
“I feel like I’ve felt the energy from the city and that transmits in the football club. Go out there, support your local business and keep Nottinghamshire thriving.”
As part of the celebrations, the internationally renowned Sherwood Forest will host a fun-filled weekend of activities on Saturday and Sunday – offering visitors an opportunity to come together and celebrate the very best of Nottinghamshire.
Themed 'Rebels, Regents and Rulers', the event is free to enter – with parking charges £7 per vehicle, per day – although there will be charges for activities such as axe throwing and archery.
Residents are also encouraged to share photographs of their Nottinghamshire Day adventures and favourite places on social media using #NottsDay, helping to showcase the county to an even wider audience.
Businesses can also support the celebrations by displaying Nottinghamshire Day #shoplocal and #supportlocalbusiness branding.
Digital assets are available on the county council’s website.
Nottinghamshire Day was launched in 2021 and celebrates our historic county’s unique identity, rich heritage and local traditions.
It takes place on 25 August as this date marks the anniversary of the start of the English Civil War, an event triggered by Charles I raising the royal standard at Nottingham Castle in 1642.
