County celebrates Nottinghamshire Day
This annual summer special (25 August) is now in its sixth year and showcased the county’s rich heritage, beautiful landscapes, thriving communities, businesses, arts and culture, sport and attractions.
A new video was unveiled featuring a special poem, read by some familiar faces from across the county, celebrating what makes Nottinghamshire a fantastic place to live, work and visit.
The video includes well-known names such as Sat Bains, renowned chef and double Michelin-starred restaurant owner, Barbara White OBE, founder of the When You Wish Upon a Star charity, and Notts cricket legend, Luke Fletcher, aka The Bulwell Bomber, now assistant coach of The Blaze, who recently lifted the T20 Vitality Blast trophy.
Local businesses, young residents, a heritage volunteer and a local librarian also feature alongside the county’s world-famous legends Robin Hood and Lady Marian.

As part of the celebrations, the internationally renowned Sherwood Forest hosted a fun-filled weekend of activities in the build-up to the day offering visitors an opportunity to come together and celebrate the very best of Nottinghamshire.
Themed 'Rebels, Regents and Rulers', The Sherwood Outlaws led the way with a thrilling a combat display with fast-paced sword and shield battles and tales of outlaws and knights.
Eventgoers also had the chance to try activities such as axe throwing and archery.
The Nottinghamshire Flag was also proudly flown across the county, including at The Council House, Nottingham’s Theatre Royal, several council headquarters, such as Newark and Sherwood District and Gedling Borough, as well as at County Hall in West Bridgford.
Nottinghamshire County Council Leader, Councillor Mick Barton, alongside Chairman, Councillor Christopher Adegoke, raised the distinctive green, red, and white Robin Hood flag in the grounds of County Hall as part of the celebrations on the day itself (25 August).
Cllr Barton said: “Nottinghamshire Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate everything that makes our county so special.”
“It’s also an important opportunity to support and highlight our local businesses and I would encourage everyone to shop locally.”
Cllr Adegoke said he is ‘honoured and proud’ to be involved in this year’s celebrations.
He said: “We should be proud of our heritage, communities and people and Nottinghamshire Day is another milestone in our county’s rich history.”
Nottinghamshire sporting stars also revealed why they love Robin Hood County so much.
Nottingham Forest’s home-grown midfield star Ryan Yates said: “The reason why I love Nottinghamshire so much is because, firstly, Nottingham Forest is such a family club.
“I feel like I’ve felt the energy from the city and that transmits in the football club. Go out there, support your local business and keep Nottinghamshire thriving.”
Nottinghamshire Day was launched in 2021 and celebrates our historic county’s unique identity, rich heritage and local traditions.
It takes place on 25 August as this date marks the anniversary of the start of the English Civil War, an event triggered by Charles I raising the royal standard at Nottingham Castle in 1642.
